I'm an amateur woodworker but I have been doing it for over 30 years. I have built many of the cabinets and furniture in my house. I started building the first pieces in my prior house 38 years ago and then brought them to my current house. I didn't know much about carving but I carved all of the cabinet doors and learned as I went along.
Since that time I have tried many disciplines in woodworking. I have built memory boxes for each of my children as they celebrated their first Christmases. Now I have continued that tradition for each of my grandchildren. I don't enjoy building the same thing twice so I always try different challenges in wood. My shop is in my basement and has extended in size three times!
Below is a memory box I made for my grandson Connor's first Christmas. The top is carved cherry and the box is hand cut padauk.
