How to Improve Your Wood Shop's Workflow
Using the 5S Program
By Steven D. Johnson
Racine, Wisconsin
Implementing the 5S Program in your workshop (whether you are a hobbyist or pro) will make your
shop time more enjoyable and more productive. You will experience less frustration, you will work
more safely, and the chances are pretty good that the work you turn out will be of higher quality.
It is based on
five Japanese words (all beginning with the letter "S").
Here's how it works:
Appreciating the Lie-Nielsen
Small Shoulder Plane
By Christopher Adkins
Atlanta, Georgia
I have learned that I enjoy the tranquility and the sense of nostalgia I get from using simple, yet
brilliantly designed hand tools. Like many woodworkers, I enjoy the prep time, and will often spend
hours in the shop just sharpening my chisels, knives and plane irons.
The most recent addition
to my tool collection is a Lie-Nielsen shoulder plane.
This is my experience with it:
Ask the Staff
Question:
I'm absolutely overwhelmed when it comes to wood finishing.
I'm making a replacement top for a folding gate-leg table
my wife acquired at an estate sale and would like to know, in ABC terms, what products to use, how
to use them and in what order? The wood is Sapele and I would like a durable, high-gloss dark
reddish-mahogany finish.

with your woodworking questions.
If yours is selected for publication,
we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.
It's SketchUp Time
Sean Headrick's column on Google SketchUp is on hiatus this month while Sean is busy renovating his new home
in California. It will return in April. Meanwhile, read Terry Chapman's new blog entry suggesting it's time for you to
download your own free copy of SketchUp and get busy using it.

generated the response we've received from customers to Charles Brock's
excellent plan bundle that provides everything you need to know to build your own Sculptured Rocker.
Now Chuck has singled out the specific tools he uses
when building the chair and listed them in one place for easy selection by woodworkers undertaking this challenging project.

Recent WOOD SLICER Testimonial
Just got a 1/2" Wood Slicer for a project. Put it on, re-tuned the band saw and POW! Right out of
the box I'm slicing off veneers of hard maple that measure consistently .030". I'm impressed,
gentlemen. The blade is everything it's cracked up to be, sharp, consistent, quiet and it leaves a
surface that a couple strokes of a scraper will take care of. I'll be back for more. — Doug F.

Tough Leather Shop Apron
Recent Testimonial
Just wanted to let you know I received your new leather shop
apron that is on sale right now and LOVE IT!! The leather is high quality (being a
longtime horseback rider and saddlery owner I know leather) and it is the only one that I found
anywhere with the pocket flaps reinforced with rivets. I needed one that could see hard service in the shop and this unit
will do the job and then some. Thanks for the great product and service.
