Grinder Grit Wheels
by Phil Colson

I am always amazed at how a problem presents itself. I have been turning for a long time and have never thought about how my grinder has two different grit wheels on it. On one side is the 60 grit and on the other side is the 100 grit. I bet your grinder is the same. As a turner I use the 60 grit for all my sharpening needs, so why is there a 100 grit on the other side?
I use the
Oneway Wolverine Grinding System
with the
Vari-grind jig
. On one side is the V-arm and on the other is the platform. When I need to use the Vari-grind with the V-arm, I put it on the 60 grit side and when I need the platform I have to take the V-arm off and install the platform. I have been doing this for over fifteen years. I am a slow learner.
I was teaching a class at the
John C. Campbell Folk School
recently and swapping the V-arm and platform around, when it occurred to me, this is silly. Just put a 60 grit on both sides and it's done, no more swapping. Now I have two 60 grit wheels on my grinder and even more time to turn.
