I have been building cabinets, bookcases and other items for several years. Two years ago I made a complete bedroom set out of cherry – headboard, two nightstands and a ten-drawer chest.

Last spring, I watched a video on YouTube of bowl turning and I thought maybe I should give that a try since I already had a lathe. I started turning simple bowls and making glue-ups of different woods for candlestick holders. I made and sold several of each and gave some to family members.

A couple of months ago, at our monthly woodturner's meeting, one of the members brought several segmented vessels that he had made. At the meeting he demonstrated making a small vessel. The first thing I said to my buddy was, "There's no way I'm doing that!" As I watched him create all the small segments and assemble the rings, I became a little more interested. I talked to him after the meeting about the procedures and when I got home, I looked on the internet and found a couple of programs for creating segments – and that's when it all started!

With the programs I didn't have to measure each segment length and angle. I also watched a video of making a wedgie sled for cutting the segments. I promptly went out to the woodshop and constructed one. I also watched a video on "Segmentology." I was awestruck! I now have the sled and the wedgies that I use to create my bowls. I will probably not be going back to just plain bowl turning!

I'm sharing a few examples of my creations.
