Here's My Woodturning!

Box Elder Bowl

My training in woodturning has been primarially self taught. I did take a one day lesson from Phil Colson (that convinced me to buy a new lathe from Highland ) and a weeklong training with Dale Larson at Aarowmont last year. I highly recommend the class with Phil and Aarowmont for any level of woodturner.

As a maker, I endeavor to make pieces which have the appeal of art and the functionality of everyday items. Many times I have no idea what I'm going to find when I begin to turn a piece of wood or slice into a fresh log. Each piece has a surprise hidden deep within. My bowls and vessels are typically turned thin, made from highly figured and richly colored woods. The bark inclusions, spalting, splits, knots and voids I find add character and visual interest to every piece. I will design and build most any type of furniture, as I like to play with various woods, paints and finishes to see what happens.

Hickory Bowl
Most of the wood I use is harvested from local trees that have come down in storms, where land is being cleared for construction or gifted by people who have a tree that needed to be taken down because of disease or age. At times I use recycled wood or sustainably harvested exotic woods from a certified supplier of these products.
