I guess you are never too old to learn new tricks. I was visiting
Mark Sillay
, a great turner, and he told me what he was does with the hollowing tip when it gets dull. I have always reground them until they disappeared. He uses a
Diamond Paddle
and hones the top of the tip.
Well, when I got home from the visit I turned a form and started to hollow. The tip wasn't cutting well, so I got my
Diamond Card
out and honed the top of the 3/16 inch cutter. I went back to hollowing and it worked! Now I can make a hollowing tip last a very long time. I will be using the same method on my Carter carbide turning tools. I'm excited to see how many times I can resharpen before the need arises to replace them. Try it out. It works for me!
