Turning Tool Preference

I can truly say after eighteen years of turning, it's still fun. I have mellowed a lot since those early days and I've found that if you are having fun turning and achieving results to your satisfaction then you are doing it right. You are using the right tool, the correct bevel, and the right method of turning.
I teach a lot and this is what I find to be true: Whether you are using the new replaceable carbide tipped tool or the old conventional traditional tools, if you are achieving the results you want, then that's the type of tool set that works for you. One is not better than the other and both require that you learn the accompanying technique for the use of the tool.
I use traditional tools because those were what were available when I started turning. If I were new to turning today, I would weigh the cost and the benefits of both types of tools, which I've come to notice are not that different. The new carbide tools are scrapers and scrapers were the first type of turning tools out there. Gouges came along later.
The primary goal in turning is to have fun. So turn and enjoy, that is what I do!
