By Tom Schmitt
Atlanta, GA
Arthritis is a nearly inevitable consequence of aging in humans. For many human males, it seems
the desire to do some woodworking is also. There are many things the modern woodworker can do to
minimize the impact of woodworking on one’s arthritis and to also minimize the impact of arthritis
on woodworking.

By Steven D. Johnson,
Racine, Wisconsin
This month, our Down to Earth Woodworker, Steven Johnson, has made quite a
bit of visible progress on the NEW Down to Earth Workshop, finishing the stairs to the second floor
as well as installing the new door and two new windows. Along the way he contemplates some
factors that could be causing the deterioration of his hammering skills, "MacGyvers" his
way to a set of sharper chisels, and even shoots a mid-project video so we can see
for ourselves what progress he has made.

than the hammer:

Finishing Wood

Bleaching in Furniture Restoration
Bleaching is a tool that is used sparingly when restoring an old piece of furniture. Often
there will be iron stains from old nails, black or very dark water stains or sun bleached
areas that are far lighter than the surrounding areas, caused by an object being in the same
location for a long period of time.
Here are FOUR things you need to know about bleaching wood:
Ask the Staff
Question:
I'm restoring an antebellum home and the upstairs heartwood pine floors have never been finished.
After sanding for a week, I found numerous cracks, holes and imperfections. I want to fill all these
and I saved the sawdust. I tried glue mixed with the sawdust, but it did not do well. Any
suggestions?
