Ask the Staff
Question: I was given some pre-stained solid oak flooring and I am attempting to build a front door with it. My question is two-fold: Firstly, even though I will be sanding the surface, some residual coloring will still be there, how can I tell if it is oil- or water-based stain? Secondly, does it matter? That is, will an oil stain cover and protect it regardless of what previous stain has been used?

BREAKTHROUGH: Now shape edge tool bevels with the DMT Dia-Flat Diamond Stone
It turns out that DMT's new Dia-Flat Lapping Stone is good for more than just flattening your sharpening stones. New testing has shown that in many shops it can be used instead of ordinary electric grinders for establishing and restoring the bevel angles on plane irons and chisels. CLICK HERE to find out more:

DVD REVIEW:
Line & Berry String Inlay by Router
By J. Norman Reid,
Delaplane, Virginia Recently, I’ve become intrigued with the idea of using inlay to enhance the appearance of my woodworking projects. But inlay always seemed too difficult and I shyed away from it. So to prepare myself for this new endeavor, I looked around for resources that could help me develop this new skill. I found what I was looking for in Glen Huey’s DVD, Line & Berry String Inlay by Router. CLICK HERE to read the rest of the review:
WOOD SLICER
Testimonial
I started using a 1/2" wide Wood Slicer bandsaw blade last night for the first time. What a joy to use! The first piece of 5" wide maple was resawn very easily. By the time I had cut a third piece of maple the edges produced were nearly as smooth as results achieved with a good jointer. The blade cut through a 2" wide knot without burn marks, negligible slowdown and very smooth results. I was extremely pleased with the results of the Wood Slicer bandsaw blade. Thanks! — D.
