I have been woodworking for 40 years. I make mostly furniture for my family's use. I have built cabinets, desks, bookcases, and have refinished and rebuilt many antique pieces for our home. I am self taught and have assembled a comprehensive library of woodworking books and magazines which I use to master new skills and as ideas for the projects I design and build.
My shop is in a single car garage in my basement. I have a table saw, band saw, lathe, planer, jointer, power belt and spindle sanders, shaper, compound miter saw and numerous hand tools. I also enjoy finding vintage tools at estate sales and refurbishing them back into useful tools. I have been a long term customer of Highland Woodworking and can say I have always been impressed with their quality and service.
Sewing Table
This arts and crafts style walnut table is made from handplaned figured walnut with rubbed on polyurethane finish. It was built as a sofa table but is also used as a sewing table for a portable sewing machine. The top is constructed using breadboard ends. The top skirt is constructed with mortise and tenon joints and the bottom stretchers are attached with wedged thru tenons. The finish is hand rubbed polyurethane.
Roubo Style Workbench
This workbench is built from Southern Yellow Pine Grade 1 with a hand made leg vise and Jorgenson end vise. The bottom of the legs have dowel inserts to hold casters for moving. The bench weighs 550 pounds and does not move when hand planing.
Oak Frame
This frame is built from quarter sawn white oak with exposed through tenons. It's finished with wipe on poly.
Walnut Bookshelf
This bookshelf is built in the Millennium style from solid walnut. This results in lightweight but very strong shelves. It is finished in wipe on poly.
Walnut Book Cabinet
This cabinet is built from highly figured walnut. All of the panels for the doors, sides and back are book matched with fielded raised panels. The shelves are made from curly maple. The drawer has curly maple interior parts and hand dovetailed joints. The pulls are made by hand from curly maple. The finish is eight coats of Waterlox. The cabinet is 84 inches tall, 25 inches wide and 12 inches deep. I made it to fit a corner in our kitchen to store my wife's collection of cookbooks.
Floor Lamp
This lamp is built from black walnut and art glass. The light comes from a two socket brass cluster fixture. I built special jigs to enable making the walnut shade which is joined with mitered bridle joints. The top is made from four walnut triangles which enhance the grain of the figured walnut and provides ventilation for the heat from the bulbs. The lamp is 54 inches tall and the shade is 20 inches square by 10 inches tall. I finished the lamp with 5 coats of Waterlox.
