This set includes five of the most popular widths from the exceptional Richter line of bevel-edged bench chisels by Narex. The 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" & and 1" chisels can be purchased as a group of 5 by themselves or within a handsome felt-lined, fitted, finger-jointed birch-ply wooden box stained the color of medium walnut with a brass plated snap-hasp for the lid. The box measures 11-7/8" x 7-1/2" x 1-3/4". (Inch measurements are actual chisel sizes, not metric equivalents.)
Richter chisels are so-named after Narex's founder, Vaclav Richter, in celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the company. They feature tang-style blades, drop forged from high quality chromium-vanadium steel, which are cryogenically treated and tempered to a minimum of 62 Rc. This provides superior edge retention properties balanced with an ease of sharpening ability.
Care is given with the factory's finish-grinding of surfaces, so your initial conditioning of the chisel's back and bevel will take very little time to complete. The chisel's side bevels along the blade slope down to an ultra-thin edge profile, allowing the chisel to reach into tight areas like the corners of dovetail sockets. They have a factory bevel grind angle of 25 degrees.
The elegantly shaped European ash handles are finished with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and shellac so the beauty of the wood grain is fully visible. The turned and polished handles are 1-1/4" at the largest diameter and 4-11/16" from the end to the stainless steel ferrule. The handle-steel connection is cushioned by a leather washer.
Richter chisels are cryogenically treated during the manufacturing process. After initial hardening, cryogenic treatment cools the steel down using liquid nitrogen to temperatures as low as 190 °C (-310 °F). This completes transformation of austenite, which increases both the hardness and toughness of the steel.
We also offer Richter bevel edged cabinet chisels individually in these and other sizes.
