I began woodworking in the late 70's, but only started woodturning in June 2010 after I got a
Richard Raffan DVD
and away I went. I wasn't real sure what I was going to do with a wood lathe. I got my normal self-taught bumps and bruises. I think there were more bruises then bumps. I was intrigued with Richard Raffan's small scoops. I started doing scoops, and then I started turning bowls.
Somewhere along the way I noticed segmented woodturning. I bought
Woodturning with Ray Allen
, where he teaches segmented woodturning. Of course I looked through his book and decided I knew more than Ray Allen. I skipped the part where he say's "if it don't fit before you glue, it won't fit after you glue." He was referring to the segments. If there ever was sound advice in segmented woodturning, that is it.
It doesn't take long to realize if segmented woodturning is or is not something for you. It is something nice to try. Just remember the above quote.
The first bowl below is made from oak, black walnut, maple, and cherry. I used a scroll saw for the scenery.

The second bowl is oak, maple, and black walnut. I got the design from a book.

The third bowl is black walnut, black locust, cherry, and maple. Again, not my design.
|
The fourth bowl was made for my 90 year old Aunt. It has 2 sun rises between the names Paula and Danny.

Below are a few more bowls I've made.
